Robotics & Making

First Robotics

Sensors, motors and code brought together into a robot that solves a real problem.

Hands on a physical machine from the first session. Students wire a sensor, read what it reports, and write the code that decides what to do about it. The last three weeks are one project the group designs itself.

What your child will learn

  • Wire a sensor and a motor without a diagram to copy
  • Read sensor values and reason about what they mean
  • Write the loop that turns a reading into an action
  • Diagnose whether a fault is in the wiring or the code

What we cover

  • Your first circuit
  • Making a light respond to a button
  • Reading a distance sensor
  • Driving a motor
  • If this, then that
  • Following a line
  • Avoiding an obstacle
  • When the sensor lies to you
  • Choosing a problem worth solving
  • Designing the machine
  • Building and failing
  • Demo day

Who it is for

  • Children who take things apart
  • Students who have done some block coding and want something physical
  • Anyone considering engineering later

What they need

  • A laptop with a USB port
  • A kit, which we post to you before week one and which is yours to keep

Your teacher

Omar Khaled

Robotics engineer and teacher

Works in industrial automation and teaches at weekends. Brings the same components to class that he uses at work, because the toy versions hide exactly the parts worth understanding.

Questions parents ask

No, it is included and it is yours afterwards. Everything in it works on its own after the course.

No. Every connection in this course is push-fit or screw-terminal.
